Johnsonburg Rams win JV tournament

The Johnsonburg Rams handed the Elk County Catholic junior varsity squad a 43-34 setback in the finals of the Elk County Catholic Junior Varsity Tournament to claim the championship. The tournament was held at the ECCHS gyms over the past two evenings. In the consolation game, the Ridgway Elkers defeated the St. Marys Area JVs by a 56 to 47 score to claim third place.Johnsonburg vs. ECCHSThe Johnsonburg Rams JVs defeated Elk County Catholic 43-34 to claim the championship of the Elk County Catholic Boys' Junior Varsity Tournament last evening. Johnsonburg moved out to an 11-7 first-period lead as they were paced by Cameron Grumley with four points, CJ Herbstritt with three, and Cole Peterson and Kyle Sheldon with two each. Scoring for the Crusaders were Clayton Housler with four and Brock McCullough with three.The second quarter found the Crusaders outscoring the Rams 10-7 to cut the lead to 18-17 at the half. In this period, Elk was led by Housler with six points, and Jack Herzing and Ben Cortina with two each. Johnsonburg was led by Grumley with three, and Peterson and Sheldon with two each.Johnsonburg used a big 12-4 third-period edge to move out to a comfortable 30-21 lead with one period remaining. Peterson and Mitchell Vallone had four points and Frank Kocjancic and Herbstritt two points each to pace Johnsonburg, while J. Herzing had two points, and Housler and McCullough one each for Elk.Both teams scored 13 fourth-quarter points as the Rams held on to win the game and the tournament title by a 43-34 score. Peterson had six points, Mitchell Vallone five points and Grumley two points to pace Johnsonburg. This time, the Dutchmen were led in scoring by Guido with six, Logan Gilmore with five, Beimel with three, and Vollmer with two. Ridgway was led by Rozelli with eight, and Luke Bobby and Zawatski with two each.Ridgway regained the lead in the third quarter as they outscored St. Marys 11-7 to go up by a 39-35 score with one period remaining to be played. Bennett led the Dutch with three points, while Gaton and Quinn Cunningham had two each. For Ridgway Rozelli had five points, JoJo Jaques four points and Byrd two. Ridgway extended their lead in the fourth quarter as they again outscored the Dutchmen 17-12 to eventually win the game by a 56-47 score.
