Katherine A. Groll

Katherine A. Groll, 89, of 185 Center St., Elk Towers, and formerly of South Michael Road, died Saturday morning, Oct. 23, 2010, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness. She was born March 6, 1921, in Fallensbee, W.Va., daughter of the late George and Alice Dale Cartwright. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. She served as a waitress in many of the area restaurants. On Jan. 12, 1944, in St. Marys, she married William E. Groll, who preceded her in death on July 27, 2005. She is survived by five daughters, Alice (Dixie) Himes and her husband LeRoy of St. Marys, Patricia Bobenrieth and her husband Andrew of St. Marys, Kimberly Schloder and her husband Thomas of St. Marys, Sharon Fox and her husband Charles of St. Marys and Faith Jashurek of St. Marys; two sons, William E. Groll Jr. and his wife Rose of St. Marys and Mick Groll and his wife Peggy of St. Marys; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and seven great-great- grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Daniel Himes and Theresa Lamper; a great-granddaughter in infancy, Hannah Badeau; six sisters, Mary Kurzinger, Sally Williams, Edna (Scottie) MacMurtrie, Anne Repaskey, Gloria Tyler and Betty Baney; and by three brothers, Ronald, John and George Cartwright. She was the last member of her immediate family.Mrs. Groll was a member of the Queen of the World Church and enjoyed reading, knitting and doing crossword puzzles. She loved being around people, especially her grandchildren. She never liked being alone. She loved nature, planting and watching her flowers grow, and her maple tree in her front yard. Due to the renovation at Queen of the World Church, family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for the late Katherine A. Groll to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, as celebrant.
