Lady Crusader tennis team wins 9-AA crown

DuBOIS - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team captured the District 9 Class AA team championship Tuesday by defeating the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 4-1 score in a match played at the DuBois Area High School courts.The Lady Crusaders took the 1-0 lead when Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi defeated Stephanie Buerk and Kelly Dietz at second doubles, 6-4, 6-2.“Laira and Maria got over early nerves to give us a big win,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.Elk made the score 2-0 when Megan Fritz and Ally Brock won 6-0, 6-4 at first doubles over Mary Rosman and Jamie VanAlstine.“Seniors Megan Fritz and Ally Brock played probably the best match of the day and of the year,” said Meier.Elk Catholic clinched the championship when Kylie Auman beat Rachel Walker 6-2, 6-4 at first singles.“To have Kylie Auman come back was something special,” commented Meier.The Lady Crusaders took the 4-0 lead when Crystal Hanes defeated Allison Shields in a very good match by both girls, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at second singles.“Crystal’s effort at second singles was outstanding. She is one of our best players,” said Meier.St. Marys made the score 4-1 when Amy Orr defeated Loreal Housler 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at third singles in the last match of the day.“Loreal has been our crunch player all year, although she was under the weather today, but I thought Amy Orr played a great match,” said Meier.“My girls played really well today,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.The Lady Crusaders will enter the PIAA Class AA tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 26, when they take on the District 7 runner-up at a site and time to be announced.Class AAAThe DuBois Area Lady Beavers captured the District 9-AAA championship, defeating the Bradford Lady Owls by a 4-1 margin in a match played at Benzinger Park.DuBois will also be in action on Oct. 26 at a site and time to be announced against the District 8 champion.
