Lady Crusaders advance to D-9A second round

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead against the Smethport Lady Hubbers in the opening round of the District 9-A playoffs, then coasted to a 54-22 victory in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gym at Elk Catholic.The win moves the Lady Crusaders into the second round of the playoffs on Thursday evening at Kane."This was a good playoff win for us," said Ken Pistner, head coach of the Lady Crusaders. "We took care of business tonight and in the process got a lot of playing time for all of our players."We had balanced scoring tonight, played very good defense and shot the ball well from both the field and the foul line. We also did a good job on the boards and got some very good play from our bench players."We are looking forward to Thursday's game with the Kane Lady Wolves. We lost two out of our three meetings with them and the girls are looking forward to getting a chance to even that out at two and two."Kristy Hanes came off the bench last evening to lead the Lady Crusaders in scoring as she finished the night with 15 points, nine of them in the first period. Hanes' points came on three field goals, two treys and a three-for-three night at the line.Karly Carnovale was next in the scoring with 10 points on a field goal, two treys and a two-for-two night at the line. Emily Gregory was next with eight points, followed by Morgan Onink with six, Abbi Petrosky with five, Lexie Meholic and Taylor DaCanal with four each and Anna Hawkins with two.Stacey Herzog led the Lady Hubbers with eight points, followed by Lauren Stratton with six points, Kayla Funk with three, Kayla Woods and Shannon Hughes with two each and Megan Zylinski with one point.The Lady Crusaders jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Carnovale hit two treys and Gregory two field goals early on. Stratton hit a foul goal and a field goal to cut the lead to 10-3, then Hanes hit two treys and a foul goal to push it to 17-3. A field goal by Herzog was followed by field goals by Hawkins and Hanes to make the score 21-5 at the end of the first period.Hughes opened the second quarter with a bucket for the Lady Hubbers, then Abbi Petrosky turned a three-point play, followed by field goals by Gregory and Meholic, to make it 28-7. Zylinski hit a foul goal and Stratton a field goal to make it 28-10. Onink then scored the final four points of the half to give Elk Catholic a 32-10 halftime lead.Herzog opened the second half with a field goal, but Elk answered with foul goals by DaCanal and Petrosky and a field goal by Carnovale, 38-12. Smethport then scored the final three points of the period on a foul goal by Stratton and a field goal by Herzog to make it 38-15 with one period remaining.Carnovale hit two foul goals to open the final period, then Meholic added a field goal and Gregory a foul goal to make it 43-15. Woods and Herzog scored for the Lady Hubbers, 43-19. Gregory added a foul goal for Elk, then Funk scored for the Lady Hubbers, 44-21. Hanes scored two foul goals and a field goal to put Elk up 48-21 before Funk hit a foul goal, 48-22. Hanes, Onink and DaCanal scored the final six points of the game for the Lady Crusaders, as Elk won the contest by a 54-22 score.Game notesThe Lady Crusaders pushed their season record to 18-7 with last night's win and will now take on the Lady Wolves of Kane on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the "Wolves' Den" at the Kane Area High School.
