Mary Chupa Cherry

Mary Chupa Cherry, 93, of Bendigo Road, Johnsonburg, died Monday, March 26, 2012 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home after a short illness. She was born on Nov. 30, 1918, in Avella, Pa., daughter of the late George Chupa and Anna (Ighnatko) Chupa. In 1946, she married George Cherry, who survives. Born and raised in Avella, she came to Johnsonburg in 1945. She had worked as a streetcar operator in Pittsburgh and in the Drabo Shipyard of Pittsburgh where she worked as a welder, manufacturing landing craft during WWII. Locally she worked at Sylvania of Emporium, Stackpole of Johnsonburg and St. Marys, and with her husband as owners/operators of the Lantz Corners Hotel and Restaurant. She was an active member of the Holy Rosary Church and enjoyed gardening, cooking and was an excellent seamstress. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Georgiana (Richard) Simchick of Johnsonburg, Dianna (Nick) Coumos of New Kensington Pa., Sylvia "Cindy" (Gary) Carnessali of Johnsonburg, and Eva Hyatt of Laurinburg, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Andy, Tony, and Steven Carnessali, Chris Simchick, Lynn Buttery, Michael Coumos, and Christina Dorko; seven great-grandchildren, Makailla, Gracie, Geno, Sophia, Max, Zachary, and Morgan; one brother, Joe (Bernice) Gruesu of Johnsonburg; one sister, Julia Manfra of Long Island, N.Y.; and one sister-in-law, Myrtle Chupa of Weirton, W.V.In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, John, Mike, George, and Anthony Chupa; one sister, Helen McConaghay; three siblings in infancy; and one brother-in-law, Frank Manfra. Funeral services for Mary Chupa Cherry will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Ubel Funeral Home of Johnsonburg, with Father David Wilson officiating. Burial will take place at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Johnsonburg. Visitation will be held on Thursday March 29, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and Friday, March 30, 2012 from 9-10 a.m. at the funeral home.
