Ramettes edge Lady Dutch 41-35 in season opener

The Johnsonburg Ramettes handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team a 41-35 non-league loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven in the opening game of the 2011-12 season for both squads.This was the first game in four years that the Lady Dutch have played without the school’s all-time scorer, Kayla Hoohuli, now a member of the Canisius College Golden Griffs basketball team.Last night’s game was a close contest for 32 minutes as neither team was able to get a run. The Ramettes led 11-10 after one period, 20-18 at the half and 28-27 at the end of three quarters.“You can’t win if you don’t box out,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli. “Every opportunity we had, we made it a point of emphasis to box out.”“Watts (Brittany) is a good player and we lost her several times on the inside and she was able to capitalize on that,” said Hoohuli. “We have to keep working as a group. The girls aren’t going to quit. They play from start to finish.” The Lady Dutch were led offensively by Jenna Anderson with 13 points on one two, three threes and a one-for-two night from the foul line. Kiana Hoohuli added 10 points on three threes and a foul shot.The Ramettes were led by Brittany Watts with 20 points on eight field goals and a four-for-seven night from the foul line. Kiana Myers was next with eight points.“I am happy, the team is happy. This is the first time in five years that we have beaten St. Marys Area,” said Johnsonburg coach Mike Zilkofski.“This was a good start to the season. The girls are happy they could get the win,” said Zilkofski.“The girls played well. They played well defensively and under control,” added Zilkofski. “This is new territory for us winning the first game of the season.”The game opened with Johnsonburg scoring the first six points on a bucket by Myers and two by Watts. Adair Gennocro hit a three and later added two foul shots to make it 6-4 at the 4:25 mark of the first period. Watts sank one of two foul shots before SMA’s Anderson hit a three, tying the game at 7-7. Watts made it 9-7 before Anderson connected on another three to make it 10-9 for the Lady Dutch’s first lead of the game. Myers scored the final points of the first period as Johnsonburg led 11-10.Watts made it 12-10 with a foul shot for the first points of the second period. Watts missed the second shot but got the follow-up for a field goal, 14-10. Gennocro made two of three foul shots, 16-12. Sloan Foster made it 16-14 before Hoohuli hit a three, giving St. Marys the 17-16 lead. Rhianon Fowler hit a three and Watts added a foul shot, 20-17. Abbey Cribbs converted one of two foul shots for the Lady Dutch to make it 20-18 at the half in favor of the Ramettes.Myers scored for Johnsonburg to start the second half. Hoohuli hit a three to cut the Ramettes’ lead to 22-21. Johnsonburg went on a 6-0 run as Watts, Myers and Chelsea Benson scored to make it 28-21 with 4:55 left in the third period. Foster hit a field goal, Anderson another three and Gennocro added a foul shot as the Lady Dutch closed it to 28-27 at the end of three quarters.Gennocro sank a foul shot to knot the game at 28 to open the fourth quarter. Watts converted a three-point play with 7:05 left, 31-28. She scored at the 6:29 mark to make it 33-28. Anderson cut it to 33-30 with a field goal at the 4:17 mark. Benson sank two foul shots before Anderson sank one for St. Marys, 35-31. The Ramettes took a 38-31 lead with a little over a minute left. Hoohuli hit a three at the 1:08 mark and converted a foul shot to make it 38-35. Danie Dwyer sank two foul shots and Fowler added a foul shot, making the final score 41-35 in favor of the Ramettes.Game notesThe Lady Dutch are now 0-1 on the season. They return to action next Tuesday when they play host to the Cameron County Lady Raiders in a non-league game. The Lady Dutch came back in the second quarter to outscore the Ramettes 10-2 to take a 16-12 halftime lead.Each team scored eight third-period points.
