Roy A. "Stony" Defranco

Roy A. "Stony" Defranco, 92, of 215 Bergen St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday night, Dec. 11, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness. He was born Jan. 20, 1920 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Antonio and Pasqualina Albanase Defranco. On May 8, 1954 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, he married Julia A. Gigliotti, who survives. He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1938. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg American Legion, Third Degree Knights of Columbus, Prince of Piedmont Club, and life member of the VFW. He was also a member of the Cursillo Movement, having made the Cursillo in 1970. He was a WWII Army vet serving overseas as a Technical Sergeant with the H&S Company of the 313th Coastal Artillery and Engineers Battalion. He served in the Tunisic Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Northern Appennines and Po Valley Campaigns and battles, for which he received the Sharp Shooters Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with five Bronze Stars. He was employed by Penntech Papers, Inc. in Johnsonburg for 45 years, retiring in 1985. He was also a part-time carpenter. In addition to his wife at home, he is survived by three sons, Joseph Defranco of Knoxville, Tenn., Daniel Defranco of Wilcox, and Rocco Defranco and his companion Cassie Bullers of Johnsonburg; a daughter, Mary Defranco of Ridgway; two grandchildren whom he loved more than life itself, Brent and Julia Defranco, both of Johnsonburg; a brother, Fred Defranco of St. Marys; and two sisters, Rose Guidice of Ridgway and Josephine, Mrs. Frank "Chick" Quattrone, of Ridgway. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Defranco; and two sisters, Nicolena Marks and Angeline Petro. A Mass of Christian Burial for Roy A. "Stony" Defranco will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church on Friday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg. Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. Condolences may be shared at
