Ryan Uhl pitches no-hitter as Dutch win 12-0

BROOKVILLE — St. Marys Area’s Ryan Uhl reared back and fired, unleashing a fastball that Brookville's Brandon Bietz couldn't catch up to in the fifth inning Monday in Brookville. Uhl fanned 12 Brookville (2-8) batters and picked up his first career no-hitter during the Flying Dutchmen’s (6-7) 12-0 win in five innings. He missed hurling a perfect game after walking the Raiders' Seth Connor in the fourth inning.Uhl could hardly hide his excitement after the game.St. Marys coach Tony Azzato now knows what it’s like to be a part of a no-hitter as both a coach and a player. When Azzato was a senior at St. Marys in 2000, teammate Billy Zore threw a no-hitter in a 15-0 win, which was also played in Brookville."No-hitters are great to see," Azzato said. "This is a great confidence boost for Ryan and a great confidence boost for the team. We've had a slow run this season and the bats have been silent, the pitching iffy at best. We put it all together today."The Flying Dutchmen’s offense started in the first. Kevin Hoy homered off of Ryan Zimmerman in the first inning, giving St. Marys a 3-0 lead.St. Marys picked up four more runs in the second inning, extending its lead to 7-0. Brookville's defense couldn't help Zimmerman last more than two innings and he was replaced by Christian Gurg. The Raiders' defense struggled all afternoon, committing five errors."You can't give a good team extra outs," Brookville coach Kenny Lindermuth said. "I thought that Ryan (Zimmerman) pitched well for two innings, but unfortunately Uhl pitched a lot better."St. Marys continued to hit the ball well in the fourth inning. Hoy and Uhl both doubled, helping the Flying Dutchmen bring the mercy rule into effect by plating five more runners. The Dutch return to action Thursday when they travel to Bradford for a 4:15 p.m. game.St. Marys 12Justin Quiggle 3-2-1, Rocco Harshbarger 1-0-1, Jordan Weinzierl 2-2-2, Kevin Hoy 4-2-2, Ryan Uhl 4-1-1, Mitchell Meyer 0-1-0, Branden Tyger 2-0-0, Dalton Kline 1-0-1, Luke Nicklas 3-1-3, Robert Watts 0-0-0, David Aul 1-0-0, Nate Geist 2-1-0, Luke Schreiber 1-0-1, Brandon Vollmer 1-0-0, Greg Copelli 1-0-0, Bob Vollmer 3-2-1.
