SMA’s Amy Orr wins D9-AA singles crown

DuBOIS - St. Marys Area sophomore Amy Orr won the District 9 Class AA Singles Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.Orr defeated Brockway’s Brittany Johnson in the championship match 6-3, 6-3.In the first set, Johnson opened a 2-0 lead. Orr battled back to knot the set at 2-all. It was tied at 3-all before Orr took control and went on to win the first set 6-3.The second set saw Orr take the early 1-0 lead. Johnson tied it at 1-all, with Orr taking a 2-1 lead. Johnson tied the set at 2-2 before Orr won two points to go up 4-2. Johnson cut Orr’s lead to 4-3 before Orr won the final two points to win the set 6-3 to win the title.“Amy played well all day long,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.“Amy’s a fighter, she doesn’t give up. Power doesn’t always work but patience is consistent. Amy plays consistently.” Orr reached the finals by defeating Brockway’s Abigail Larson 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. She then defeated ECC’s Loreal Housler in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2.Johnson reached the finals by defeating St. Marys Area’s Mary Rosman 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she defeated Elk Catholic’s Abby Meyer 6-3, 6-1.Elk Catholic’s Meyer reached the semifinals by defeating Johnsonburg’s Riley Fannin 6-1, 6-0, while Housler defeated Johnsonburg’s Taylor Scida, 6-3, 6-3.This marks the second year in a row that a member of the Lady Dutch squad won the singles crown. Rachel Walker captured the 2010 title.Orr will now advance to the PIAA Class AA tournament scheduled for Nov. 4 and 5 at the Hershey Racquet Club.In Class AAA, DuBois Area's Jenna Kirk defeated her teammate Jenny Reese 6-1, 6-1 for the championship.
