SMA swim teams sweep Brookville squads

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team held their 2011 home opener on Thursday night against the Brookville Raiders. The Dutch and Lady Dutch squads won their meets, raising their records to 2-0 for the season.The Lady Dutch placed first every event in the lineup to win the meet 110-53. Double individual winners included Steph Buerk in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyles and Emma Daghir in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Other individual winners included Kylee Proudfit in the 200-yard individual medley, Shannon Krieg in one-meter diving, Michaela Rupprecht in the 100-yard butterfly, Megan Barber in the 100-yard freestyle and Brittany Orr in the 100-yard backstroke.The Lady Dutch prevailed in the relays, with first-place finishes in all three events. The winning 200-yard medley relay consisted of Orr, Daghir, Rupprecht and Proudfit, while Barber joined Proudfit, Daghir and Buerk to win the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 400-yard freestyle relay won their unscored event with the lineup of Barber, Rupprecht, Orr and Buerk.“Every race that the girls had featured quality swims. We knew our depth would help us tonight, but we were very excited at how determined these girls were to come out strong and post great times for this early in the season,” noted Coach Mark DeMuro.The Dutchmen also notched another win with the final tally of 97-69.The boys dropped their first relay of the meet to the Raiders by a touch, but quickly made up ground, taking eight of the remaining eleven events.Andrew Cotter was a double winner for the Dutch, winning the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Single individual winners included Alex Renwick in the 200-yard individual medley, Justin Huey in one-meter diving, Jeffrey Moore in the 500-yard freestyle and Corey Koss in the 100-yard backstroke.The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cotter, Matt Hoffman, Ryan Struble and Moore as the anchor held off a charging Brookville squad, but managed to win the event by .6 seconds. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Renwick, Struble, Koss and Moore breezed to their first-place, unscored finish.“We saw a few time drops from some of our guys tonight, which we thought could happen, but you never know.
