St. Marys Legion opens season with 6-4 victory

The St. Marys American Legion Baseball team opened their season Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory over the Bradford Legion at Berwind Park.“I thought the team played well together for their first game of the season,” said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi. “Bradford hit the ball hard against our pitching.”Bradford had 11 hits in the contest. Kevin Hoy started on the mound for St. Marys and worked three innings, giving up nine hits and striking out three. Ryan Uhl worked the final four innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out seven.“Ryan Uhl slammed the door on Bradford and held them down. Ricky Pearsall had a good game for us as lead-off hitter, going three-for-three and that’s what a lead-off hitter is supposed to do,” said Pasi.St. Marys had 11 hits in the game, led by Pearsall’s three singles. Kevin Hoy had a double and a single, while Jordan Weinzierl, Ben Daghir, Luke Daghir, Eric Wehler, Luke Nicklas and Nate Geist all singled.In the top of the first inning, Bradford left the bases loaded. St. Marys left one man on base.Each team left a runner stranded in the second inning. Bradford scored four runs in the top of the third inning on five hits and a hit batter to take a 4-0 lead. St. Marys came back with a run in the home half of the inning as Pearsall singled and stole second. A double off the left field fence by Hoy scored Pearsall to make the score 4-1.Bradford left a runner on base in the top of the fourth. Wehler led off the home half of the inning with a walk. Nicklas followed with a single. A single by Geist scored Wehler. Pearsall walked to load the bases. A single by Weinzierl scored both Nicklas and Geist. With one out, Uhl was intentionally walked. With two outs, Luke Daghir singled, scoring both Pearsall and Weinzierl to give St. Marys the 6-4 lead.Bradford went in order in the fifth, while St. Marys left a man on base.The sixth inning found both teams leaving a runner stranded.Bradford left a man on base in the top of the seventh as St. Marys recorded the 6-4 victory.St. Marys, now 1-0 on the season, is scheduled to travel to Kane Friday for a 6 p.m. contest.Bradford 4Harrington 3-0-0, Newhouse 3-0-1, Colbert 4-1-2, Wilber 4-1-2, Scott 3-1-2, Miller 1-0-0, C.
