St. Marys wins nightcap 10-9

The St. Marys Legion baseball squad raised their record to 4-0 on the season Saturday night at Berwind Park as they used a walk-off single by Mitch Meyer to record a 10-9 victory over the Fox Township squad.Fox had scored their nine runs in the first two innings of the contest. Going into the home half of the seventh inning, Fox held a 9-8 lead over St. Marys. Eric Wehler led things off for St. Marys with a single. Dan Singer’s sacrifice bunt moved Wehler to second. A double by Ivan Wortman sent Wehler to third. Kevin Hoy received an intentional walk to load the bases. Ben Cortina picked up an RBI on an infield out, scoring Wehler to knot the game at 9-all. Jack Herzing also received an intentional walk to keep the bases loaded. Mitch Meyer delivered a single to score Wortman with the winning run.“We gave up too many runs early in both games today,” said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi. “We had good pitching from Ben Cortina, who held them scoreless and kept us in the ball game. We had a lot of clutch hits tonight, but we have to get out of the habit of letting our opponents score early.”“I am pleased that we are 4-0, but we have a long way to go,” he added.St. Marys had 17 hits Saturday night. Ivan Wortman went four-for-five with a double and three singles. Mitch Meyer went three-for-four with a double and two singles. Ben Cortina had a double. Eric Wehler, Dan Singer, Kevin Hoy and Jack Herzing each had two singles. Shea Meyer added a single.Fox Township had nine hits in the contest. Brandon Vollmer and Chris Calliari each had two singles. Branden Tyger and Justin Beimel both doubled. Hitting singles were Brian Merritt, Justin Quiggle and Brandon Schlimm.Jake Cortina started on the mound for St. Marys, facing six batters, giving up one hit and walking three. Kyle Schneider worked 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up five hits, walking one and striking out one. Ben Cortina worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and striking out four.Justin Beimel went the distance for Fox, giving up 17 hits, walking five and striking out five.Fox scored six times in the top of the first. Merritt and Quiggle both walked. A single by Calliari scored Merritt. Branden Tyger walked to load the bases. A double by Beimel cleared the bases with Quiggle, Calliari and Tyger all scoring. Vollmer was hit by a pitch. With one out, Alexx Tyger hit into a fielder’s choice, erasing Vollmer and scoring Beimel. Tyger took second on an error, with Luke Schreiber receiving a walk. A single by Merritt scored Tyger as Fox took a 6-0 lead. Wehler led off the home half of the inning with a walk. He stole second and moved to third on a single by Singer. A single by Wortman scored Wehler. Hoy walked to load the bases. A double by Ben Cortina scored Singer and Wortman. A single by Herzing scored both Hoy and Cortina as St. Marys cut the Fox lead to 6-5.Fox scored three more runs in the top of the second. Calliari reached base on an infield single. Branden Tyger doubled, scoring Calliari. With one out, Vollmer reached base on an infield single. Schlimm singled, scoring Tyger. Vollmer was able to score on a throwing error as Fox took the 9-5 lead. With two outs in the home half of the second, Hoy reached base on an infield single and stole second. Ben Cortina walked and Herzing singled, scoring Hoy and cutting the Fox lead 9-6.Fox left a runner stranded in the top of the third. Shea Meyer led off the home half of the inning with a single. With one out, Wehler singled. With two outs, Wortman singled, scoring pinch runner Nick Burdick, but Wehler was thrown out at the plate as St. Marys made the score 9-7.A double play helped St. Marys put Fox down in order in the fourth. St. Marys left two men on base in their half of the inning. Fox left a runner stranded in the top of the fifth. Anthony Grimone reached base on an error to start the St. Marys’ fifth. With one out, Singer singled. Wortman followed with a single, scoring Grimone to make the score 9-8.Fox went in order in the top of the sixth while St. Marys left a man on base in the home half of the inning. The top of the seventh saw Fox go down in order. St. Marys then came up with the two runs in the home half of the inning to win the game 10-9.St. Marys travels to Wilcox tonight, while Fox plays host to Bradford.
