Warren eliminates St. Marys minor softball all-stars

The St. Marys Little League Softball Minor League All-Star team was eliminated from the District 10 tournament on Thursday evening with a 16-1 four-inning loss to Warren at Benzinger Park. St. Marys, the visiting team, got on the scoreboard first with their lone run, but then was unable to answer as Warren scored 16 unanswered runs over the course of three innings to claim the victory. Michelle Gerber started on the mound for St. Marys, working one-third of an inning, walking five and striking out one. Jenna Weisner took over for one and two-thirds of an inning, giving up one hit, walking five, and striking out one. Gerber then came back on the mound for the final inning, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out three. Julia Labdell started on the mound for Warren, working three innings and giving up two hits, walking four, and striking out five. Trinity Wennberg worked the final inning, walking three and striking out one. St. Marys' two hits were both singles, one by Tessa Grotzinger and the other by Brittany Shaw. Warren had three hits, led by Gracie Wood with a triple. Trinity Wennberg had a double, and Kiersten Hoffman singled. With one out in the top of the first, Taylor Newton walked and then scored as Michelle Gerber reached base on an error. Gerber made it to third, but then was called out for trying to advance while the ball was in the circle. Allison "Pete" Schlimm walked, but was left stranded as Tessa Grotzinger struck out. In the home half of the inning, five batters walked and one reached base on an error, accounting for three of the team's runs, all before the first out was recorded. After the Warren squad batted through their lineup once, St. Marys changed pitchers, putting Weisner on the mound. She walked her first batter, struck out the next and then Labdell flied out to right to end the inning with Warren ahead 6-1. St. Marys left a pair of runners on base in the top of the second. After the first two batters struck out, Shaw singled to left, made it to second as Lindsey Quagliani walked, and then both picked up another base on a passed ball. They were left stranded, though, as Weisner hit a pop-up foul ball that was caught by Warren's catcher. Warren pushed through two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Gracie Wood led off with a triple and then scored as Marissa Grubbs safely reached base on a fielder's choice. Seneca Bennett grounded to the shortstop and was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice, but Grubbs scored on the play, making the score 8-1 in favor of Warren. St. Marys again left another pair of runners-- this time Gerber and Grotzinger-- on base in the top of the third, but was unable to score any runs. Warren kept their momentum going in the home half of the inning, recording eight more runs to take a 16-1 lead. Warren then kept St. Marys from scoring in the top of the fourth to secure the 16-1 win and eliminate St. Marys from the tournament. Ellie Fledderman led off with a walk for St. Marys and was replaced by Quagliani, who picked up second and third on passed balls. Shaw went down swinging for the first out. Brianna Grotzinger walked, and as she left for first Quagliani tried to steal home and was thrown out. With Weisner up to bat, Grotzinger picked up second and third on passed balls and then she tried to steal home as Weisner walked. Grotzinger was unable to beat the throw, ending the game and handing Warren the win.
